Sir Michael Brady FRS, FREng is BP Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford. Professor Brady's degrees are in mathematics (BSc and MSc from Manchester University, and PhD from the Australian National University). He was appointed Senior Research Scientist of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1980 and helped found its world famous robotics laboratory. In 1985, he left MIT to take up a newly created Professorship in Information Engineering at Oxford where he founded the Robotics Laboratory and the Medical Vision Laboratory (MVL). Prof. Brady combines his academic work, with a range of entrepreneurial activities, including non-executive board positions at Oxford Instruments plc and Isis Innovation (Oxford University’s intellectual property company). Prof. Brady is a founding director of the start-up companies Guidance (http://www.gcsltd.co.uk), which develops navigation systems for mobile robots and for dynamic ship positioning as well as electronic tags for offenders, and Mirada Solutions Limited (http://www.mirada-solutions.com), which developed medical image analysis software and became Siemens Molecular Imaging in April 2005 after its purchase by CTI Molecular Imaging Inc. Most recently, Prof. Brady has been an investor and Senior Independent Director of the start-up companies Ixico, which provides image analysis services to the pharmaceutical industry, and an investor and chairman of Dexela, which is developing a novel 3D mammography system for more reliable and early detection of breast cancer. He is also consultant to the Translational Medicine and Genetics group of GSK, where he is an external coordinator of imaging in oncology.
