Mike Morris is president and cofounder of Ocean Optics, Inc., a leading supplier of solutions for optical sensing. Morris cofounded Ocean Optics in 1989 when he received $1.2 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, and he has served as the company’s president since its inception. A biochemist by training and entrepreneur by nature, Morris has nearly 30 years of experience in the design, manufacture, and marketing of technology-related products and services. Prior to founding Ocean Optics, Morris was the Associate Director of Technology Transfer for NASA’s Southern Technology Applications Center, and he also worked as a sales representative for worldwide laboratory products supplier Fisher Scientific. In his tenure at Ocean Optics, Morris has participated in the development of hundreds of products, helped grow company sales to an annual rate of nearly $50 million, and assembled a workforce of nearly 200 employees at six locations worldwide. Today, Ocean Optics is recognized as the inventor of miniature fiber-optic spectroscopy and has sold more than 80,000 spectrometers since 1989. Morris has a BS in Marine Science from the University of South Florida and an MS degree in Biochemistry from Rutgers University.
