Summary of the first (2015) Summer Course Edition

Under the direction of the Prof. Jose Miguel Lopez-Higuera of the University of Cantabria, 20 highly renowned professionals and professors from the most prestigious institutions and organizations of the world, highlighted  in Santander the importance of Science and Technology of light (Photonics) for a new world.

Through nine sessions (including 2 round tables), the invited speakers reviewed the importance of Photonics and its impact in key themes such as: life, health and the environmental sciences;  telecommunications and sensors (sensing and measurement); efficient lighting, energy and advanced manufacturing using laser.  The course concluded with a round table discussion analyzing the needs for the training of professionals and researchers in light sciences and technologies to successfully address the challenges of the 21st century.

In addition to Dr. Robert Lieberman, President-elect 2015 of the SPIE and President of the company Lumoptics from California (United States), the following participations should be highlighted: the President of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and director of the Max Planck Institute for the science of light, University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) Prof. Philip Russell, inventor of the Photonic Crystal; The director of the Rochester Institute of optics, USA Prof. X-C. Zhang; Prof. Bruce J. Tromberg, the director of Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, University of California, Irvine (United States); Prof. Jüergen Popp, director Institute of technology Photonics, Jena (Germany); the Deputy Director of the Center for research in

Optoelectronics of the University of Southampton (United Kingdom); Prof. John David Richardson. Very well known Spanish researchers such as Professors Capmany, Roso, Molpeceres, Quindant, Algora, Miñano, Calvo and López-Higuera also participated in the event. The two round tables were conducted by the pioneers of Photonics in Spain: Prof. Martin Pereda and the former President of SPIE Maria Yzuel.

The Advanced Course was conceived as a great opportunity to contribute to the education of citizens, to review and actualize knowledge in this Key or Essential science and technology for the development of the nations and, at the end of the day, of a new world. It was also a great opportunity to ensure that policymakers were made aware of the problem-solving potential of Photonics.

It must be highlighted that taking into account the successful development of this course, the UIMP has decided to create the International School on Light Sciences and Technologies, IS-LiST, whose first edition will be held on June 20-24, 2016, Santander, Spain.

This New International school is envisioned to be a top worldwide International forum (every fourth week of June) on Light Sciences and Technologies in the framework of a top “special university” and in a privileged environment: the “Palacio de la Magdalena” in Santander, Cantabria (Spain). Each edition of this international school will have an intensification or main core in a specific application area and additional current hot topics.  This first edition will have the main core focused on Light in Life Science and Health being invited four Nobel Laureates.
